Do Now 12/3

Twitter can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Some students who are shy and don't like to take part in class disscussions may rather tweet their answers instead. This will get everyone in the class involved. Twitter can also be used to contact other students and teacher outside of the classroom. Twitter can be used as an additional information source too. If a student cannot find the information they need from google, Twitter can be used to find it. Twitter is good for not only all of the things mentioned above but also  to keep students interested during class. When using Twitter students are more likely to pay attention and be involved.

Do Now 11/18

When I see poverty and violence in the news or in the community it makes me wonder what I can do to help stop them. I like to help out in school but I think it would be even better if I could also help the community. To help these causes food drives, clothing drives, and anti violence fundraisers should be created. These ideas are fun and easy ways to involve the community, help great causes, and fulfill my goal to help others.

Do Now 11/11/13

On Friday, Typhoon Haiyan ravenged the small island that is the Philippines. This came as a surprise to me because I did not hear this terrible news until this morning. All I think of is how many families have been separated, how many people have lost their lives, and how many people are now homeless. With that said, there are so many things people can do to help the victims of this natural disaster. Average people like you and me can send clothes, money, food, and other essential goods that people in the Philippines are deprived of right now. When disasters like this occur the most important things is for everyone to pitch in and help one another.

Wiki Research

I ,like many other students, have been told not to use Wikipedia for projects because if is unreliable. This is not necessarily true. Most of the information that is found on Wikipedia is true, though it may be outdated. Not only are wiki's good for finding information they are also good for collaboration. In school we use email and Google Drive in order to collaborate but what if we just used a wiki page instead? Things like study guides, virtual field trips, and peer editing can be easily shared on wiki. It is a lot easier to share documents through a wiki because it is public. Unlike Google Drive, a wiki page does not have to be shared in order for someone to see and edit it.

Teachers can even post notes on wiki. In core classes, like English, Math, History, etc., someone who is absent that person can easily access those notes from home. Also it may be easier for student who are in class because they can get anything they may have missed if they weren't paying attention. In language courses teachers can introduce exploratory projects. For example if the class is learning about a certain country, the whole class can share the information they find on it in one page.

In this class we can use wiki's for many thing like sharing data, links, and collecting feedback. For example if someone wants feed back on their blog, this is an easy way to collect it without using a survey. Also if we all want to collect data on one subject, we can collaborate on a wiki page.

Like many others, I only have experience with wiki's when it comes to research. Many don't know all of the power that wiki's hold. They are a lot more easy to use Google Drive and email. If teachers were taught how to use wiki's in a classroom, students would have an overall better learning experience.

Do Now: If I were invisible...

If I were invisible for a day there are a lot of good things I would do. I would help people in need. For example if someone was getting bullied I would step in to save them. Maybe I would even help someone with classwork if they were to afraid to ask a teacher for help. If a friend needed to find something out and didn't want to ask I would eaves drop too. Of course I would pull at least one prank on a friend because that's what anyone would do if they were invisible.

I would skip school and roam around W-R and neighboring areas. I could pick up trash and help old people cross the street. It wouldn't matter if I went to school or not because either way I would be marked absent Maybe I would randomly leave presents at peoples doors for no reason. Hopefully it would make their day a little better. Overall I would use my power for good. A lot of people would rather steal from a store or rob a bank but I would rather do something to help people.

New Class

If I could add a new class to our curriculum, I would add a French class. This course used to be offered but was eliminated due to the lack of student signing up for it. I have always wanted to learn French and was very disappointed when I found out the class was no longer offered. I would add this class so students have more options when choosing a language class to take.

The class would meet during school hours like any other language course. Students would be assessed through tests, quizzes, projects, and verbal presentations. Like other language courses there would be different levels to take( ex. French 1, French 2, etc.). In lower levels classes there would be English spoken to teach students but as the levels get higher less English will be spoken until the class is conducted completely in French. This course would be challenging but still passable if the students work hard. Most importantly, students will have fun while learning and kept engaged throughout class. I think it would be a great edition to the Wood-Ridge curriculum.

The European Space Agency is in the process of making a new robot to send to Mars. Their inspiration is a snake. Researchers at the SINTEF Research Institute in Norway are making this new robot because they say it will be able to get into spaces that other rovers have not been able to. Though they do not know how the robot will react to the gravity and temperature changes, they think the snake robot will be a great success. Researchers say "It could tell us how Mars has evolved as a planet. Click here to see the full article.

English II Honors

This year I am taking English II Honors with Ms. Millar. Right now we are learning about literary terms but she said we are going to read books that correspond with what we are learning in history. So far I think that she is a very good teacher. Ms. Millar teaches in a way that all different types of learners can understand the curriculum.

The grading policy is fair and we are allowed to do an extra credit study guide for our weekly vocabulary tests. We don't get much homework, but when we do it has to be complete or you get a 0. Also the weekly tests give you a chance to bring up your grade if you are not doing well.

I am very exited to start our literary terms project because we have to incorporate literary terms into a music video. We can make a completely new song or use the music from another song.We have to film it and then upload it to YouTube. We can be as creative as we want with it. Judging from projects done by her former students, I think this project will be a lot of fun to make.

This video isn't from Ms. Millar's class but is similar to the project we have to do.

What September 11th Means to Me...

When September 11th occurred I was only three years old. I was at my great aunts house because my mom had to work. I don't really remember that day because I was so young. Even though that day did not directly effect me, I know a lot of people who it did. Since then, there have been a lot of changes in our county when it comes to security, especially in airports. In the United States, people have to take off there shoes, walk through a scanner, and have their bags scanned. When I was in the airport in Germany, all they did was scan my bags and scan me with a wand. It was really weird to me because I am so used to having to go through a long process. It showed me how cautionary we are here and how 911 not only effected people but the way security is taken so seriously. It is a day that will never be forgotten because of its lasting effect on our country.
